These negative feelings are perhaps felt even more deeply by elderly refugee populations. ESTA’s mission is aligned with the mission of BuildaBridge’s goal for the mural arts experience, for instance, using creative expression to foster self-esteem, pride, joy, and a sense of accomplishment. They have found success in transforming oral histories into works of art – theater, writing, dance, and music. The shared art-making experiences build stronger family units, create safer communities, and demonstrate that culture builds community connections. Although the mural project did not focus on the elderly and youth working together, the elders’ intent for the mural was to use as a means for initiating dialogue with the community, and most of all, to share their stories with their children and grandchildren.
