This course emphasizes the basic philosophy and methodology of arts in community transformation through organizational leadership and management. The development of necessary personal and community relationships is essential. Often taken in connection with an internship or practicum, the course includes the implementation of leadership and management skills including: the principles and practices of needs assessment, planning, recruitment, training, and the ongoing empowerment of others within an organization or program. Students will write or refine a personal strategic life plan, demonstrate an understanding of basic organizational processes, reflect through journal writing on the student's leadership gifting and experience. Course objectives are:
- Explore effective decision-making and personal accountability
- Review the principles of working effectively with those different from oneself.
- Establishing a work ethic and value system with a commitment to social justice.
- Understand the principles of group dynamics and effective teamwork.
- Develop a range of leadership and management skills of planning a life and work vision and mission, designing a project plan, leading change, resolving conflict, and motivating others.
